Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about the TOEFL

Q.  What is TOEFL?

A. TOEFL is an acronym for Test of English as a Foreign Language, which is the official name of the test. If you are an international student pursuing an education in an English-speaking country, then you may need to take the test in order to apply to a university or college.

Q.  What is TOEFL IBT and ITP?

A. The TOEFL IBT test is the TOEFL test taken over the internet at testing centers around the world. The other form of test is the paper test (ITP), which is offered at places where the internet is not available.

Q.  Can I retake the TOEFL test?

A. Yes. Prior to the recent changes you had to wait 12 days to retake the test. Now, the wait is only 3 days. This change was made to provide students with more opportunities to take the test in the event they need to meet urgent deadlines. Remember, you can still take the TOEFL as many times as you like.

Q.  What are the TOEFL scores?

A. The TOEFL consists of 4 sections: reading, listening, speaking and writing. The scores range from 0 to 30 for each section. For a total score of 0-120.

Q.  Why is ETS TOEFL also referred to as TOEFL ETS?

A. The TOEFL was created and is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Founded as a non-profit organization 72 years ago, ETS develops, administers and scores more than 50 million tests each year in more than 180 countries, at over 9000 locations.

Q.  How can I improve my TOEFL reading practice?

A. The best way to improve your TOEFL reading practice is by taking the TOEFL TRAINERS Preparation Course. This will get you ready for the types of questions that will be asked on the test. It will also expand your vocabulary and improve important reading skills.

Q.  Where can I find a TOEFL practice test?

A. As part of the TOEFL TRAINERS Preparation Course you will be given practice tests that focus on reading, listening, speaking and writing, the four skills you must master to achieve your desired TOEFL score.

 

Q.  How soon should I start studying for the TOEFL exam?

A. The sooner you start the better your chances are of scoring higher on the test. We recommend you enroll in TOEFL TRAINERS Preparation Course at least 4 months prior to taking the test.

 

 

Q.  How many years is the TOEFL test score valid after I take it?

A. Your test score is valid for 2 years after you take it, so we encourage you to prepare yourself in advance and take the test as soon as possible. That way, you won’t be pressured to take it at the last minute.
